Simplify Outdoor Adventures with Containerized Gear Storage Solutions

Picture this: you’re gearing up for your next outdoor adventure, but as you rummage through your cluttered storage space, you can’t seem to find your camping stove or hiking boots. Sound familiar? For outdoor enthusiasts like you, keeping your gear organized, accessible and protected is essential for hassle-free adventures. In this guide, we’ll explore how containerized storage solutions can revolutionize the way you store and transport your outdoor gear, ensuring it’s always ready for your next excursion.

Maximizing Space Efficiency

When it comes to outdoor adventures, efficient use of space is crucial. Traditional storage methods, such as plastic bins or overflowing closets, often lead to wasted space and difficulty in finding specific items. However, containerized storage offers the perfect solution by providing a spacious and customizable space to accommodate all your camping and adventure gear.

With a shipping container, you have a blank canvas to design your storage layout according to your specific needs. Whether you need ample space for large items like tents and coolers or designated compartments for smaller essentials like cooking utensils and first aid kits, the versatility of containerized storage allows you to create a tailored organizational system that maximizes every inch of available space.

By incorporating shelving units, racks, and storage bins into your container setup, you can create a multi-tiered storage solution that optimizes vertical space and keeps your gear neatly organized and easily accessible. This not only reduces clutter but also enhances efficiency when packing and unpacking for outdoor adventures, ensuring that everything has its designated place for quick retrieval.

Protection from the Elements for your Outdoor Adventure Gear

Camping and adventure gear are investments worth protecting, but exposure to the elements can wreak havoc on their integrity over time. From rain and snow to harsh sunlight and wind, outdoor equipment faces constant threats when left unprotected. Fortunately, containerized storage offers a reliable solution to shield your gear from nature’s elements.

Shipping containers are built to withstand the harshest environmental conditions, with sturdy steel construction and weather-resistant seals that keep moisture at bay. This means your tents, sleeping bags, and other essentials stay dry and free from mold or mildew, even during heavy downpours or snowstorms.

With the addition of insulation, the solid walls of shipping containers can provide excellent protection against temperature fluctuations, helping to regulate the internal climate and protect sensitive gear from extreme heat or cold. Say goodbye to warped gear or frozen equipment – with containerized storage, your gear remains in optimal condition year-round.

And keep your gear from being rodent food – shipping containers offer protection against pests and critters that may otherwise find their way into your gear. With sealed doors and tight-fitting seals, containers create a secure barrier that keeps unwanted intruders out, ensuring your equipment stays safe and undamaged between adventures.

Secure Storage Solutions

When it comes to safeguarding your valuable camping and adventure gear, security can’t be overstated. We all know how expensive outdoor gear can be and traditional storage options such as sheds or outdoor racks may leave your equipment vulnerable to theft. Containerized storage offers a hardy solution to protect your gear.

Shipping containers are constructed from durable steel and feature sturdy locking mechanisms, providing a high level of security for your equipment. With lockable doors and tamper-resistant seals, you can have peace of mind knowing that your gear is safely stored and protected from unauthorized access.

Plus, containerized storage allows you to customize security features according to your specific needs. From installing additional locks and security cameras to implementing alarm systems or motion sensors, you have the flexibility to enhance security measures and further safeguard your valuable outdoor gear. With containerized storage, you can enjoy greater peace of mind knowing that your equipment is securely stored and protected at all times.

Outdoor Adventure Gear Organization Made Easy

Keeping outdoor adventure gear organized can be a challenge, especially when dealing with different equipment for camping, hiking, biking, and other adventures. Traditional storage methods often result in a cluttered mess, making it difficult to find and access the items you need when you need them. However, containerized storage offers a simple and efficient solution to keep your gear organized and easily accessible.

With the spacious interior of a shipping container, you have room to store all your camping and outdoor adventure gear in one location. No more searching through multiple storage bins or rummaging through cluttered shelves – everything has its designated place within the container, making it easy to locate items as needed.

Consider adding shelving units, storage bins, and hanging racks within the container. These storage solutions help maximize vertical space and create designated storage areas for different types of gear. Whether it’s tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, or outdoor clothing, each item can be neatly stored and readily accessible when it’s time to embark on your next adventure.

Want to go the extra mile? Labeling and categorizing items within the container can help simplify organization and minimize clutter. Use clear labels or color-coded tags to identify the contents of storage bins or shelves, making it easy to quickly locate specific items without having to dig through piles of gear.

Beyond Outdoor Adventure Gear Storage

Whether you’re a solo adventurer or part of a group, shipping containers offer versatile storage solutions to accommodate all your outdoor pursuits, from weekend camping trips to extended wilderness expeditions.

Beyond storing camping and adventure equipment, shipping containers can be repurposed for a ton of uses, both residential and commercial. From makeshift cabins and off-grid retreats to pop-up shops and mobile offices, the possibilities are virtually endless. Imagine transforming a shipping container into a cozy base camp for weekend getaways, complete with sleeping quarters, a kitchenette, and storage space for outdoor gear. With a few modifications and creative touches, you can customize your container to suit your unique needs and preferences.

Containerized storage also offers a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional construction methods. By repurposing decommissioned shipping containers, you’re giving new life to durable steel structures that would otherwise end up in landfills. This eco-conscious approach aligns with the principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship, making containerized storage a responsible choice for outdoor enthusiasts who value conservation and preservation.

Spring Cleaning Your Shipping Container – A List of Tips and Tricks

Spring is in the air, and it’s the perfect time to refresh and rejuvenate your shipping container space. Whether you use it for storage, as a workshop, or for any other purpose, a little spring cleaning can go a long way in maximizing its functionality and efficiency. In this guide, we’ll explore some expert tips and tricks for tidying up and organizing your shipping container in preparation for the season ahead.

Declutter and Assess

As you start your spring cleaning, take a systematic approach to decluttering and assessing the contents of your shipping container. If you want to really deep clean it makes sense to start by removing items one by one, carefully evaluating each for its utility and necessity. Ask yourself if you’ve used the item in the past year and if it serves a purpose in your current setup. Items that are broken, outdated, or no longer needed can be set aside for donation, sale, or recycling. By decluttering first, you’ll create a clean slate and make it easier to organize and optimize your space effectively.

Spring Cleaning Deep Clean

Once you’ve decluttered your shipping container and cleared out unnecessary items, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and give it that thorough deep clean. Start by sweeping or vacuuming the floors to remove any dust, dirt, or debris that may have accumulated over time. Pay special attention to corners, crevices, and hard-to-reach areas where dirt tends to hide. Next, wipe down all surfaces, including walls, shelves, and storage containers, using a mild detergent or cleaning solution. For stubborn stains or grime, consider using a gentle scrub brush or sponge to loosen and remove buildup.

Don’t forget to clean the exterior of the container as well, removing dirt, mud, and other debris to keep it looking fresh and presentable. A clean shipping container not only improves aesthetics and creates a more pleasant environment for storage or working, it can also improve the longevity of your container.

Inspect for Damage

With your shipping container cleaned, it’s time to conduct a thorough inspection for any signs of damage or wear. Begin by examining the exterior of the container for dents, scratches, or rust spots that may have developed over time. Take your time with this and pay close attention to areas prone to water pooling or corrosion, such as the roof, corners, and door seals.

Inside the container, check for signs of leaks, moisture buildup, or structural issues that could compromise its integrity. If you discover any damages, take note and plan repairs to prevent further deterioration. Addressing these issues as soon as possible will help maintain the structural integrity of your shipping container and prolong its lifespan.

Organize Storage

With your shipping container now clean and inspected, it’s time to organize your storage space effectively. Start by categorizing your items based on their type, frequency of use, and size. Group similar items together to create designated zones within the container, such as tools, equipment, seasonal items, or personal belongings.

Use shelves, racks, and storage bins to maximize vertical space and keep items off the floor. Label containers and shelves clearly to easily identify the contents and make it easy to find things when you need them. By organizing your storage space thoughtfully, you’ll increase efficiency, minimize clutter, and create a functional and efficient space within your shipping container.

Use Vertical Space

While you’re organizing think about making the most of the vertical space available in your shipping container to maximize storage capacity. Install shelves, racks, or hanging organizers on the walls to create additional storage spaces. These vertical storage solutions can help keep your floor space clear while providing easy access to frequently used items like garden tools. Consider adjustable shelving units or modular storage systems that can be customized to fit your specific needs.

Implement a Maintenance Schedule Beyond Spring Cleaning

Establish a regular maintenance schedule to keep your shipping container clean and organized throughout the year. Schedule routine inspections, cleanings, and repairs to ensure its continued functionality and longevity.

Enhance Ventilation

Whether you’re using your container as storage or as a workspace, improving airflow and ventilation within your shipping container is important for maintaining optimal conditions and preventing moisture buildup, mold, or mildew. Consider installing vents or fans to promote air circulation and regulate temperature and humidity levels. Ventilation can help to remove stale air and moisture, creating a more comfortable and healthier environment inside the container.

Additionally, installing windows or skylights can allow natural light and fresh air to enter the space, further improving ventilation and improving overall air quality. By prioritizing ventilation, you’ll create a more pleasant and functional environment within your shipping container.

Invest in Security Measures

Protect your belongings by investing in security measures such as sturdy locks, security cameras, or motion sensors. These measures can deter unauthorized access and safeguard valuable items stored in your shipping container. Also, make sure to secure windows, doors, and any other potential entry points to prevent theft.

Consider Container Modifications

Explore container modification options to tailor your space to better suit your needs. Add windows for natural light, lockboxes for security, insulation for temperature control, or shelving for additional storage capacity.

Navigating the Shipping Container Market as a First-Time Buyer

Are you considering purchasing a shipping container for the first time? Whether you’re looking for extra storage space, a unique building project, or a transportation solution, buying a shipping container, also known as a sea can, can be a practical and cost-effective option. However, navigating the sea can market can be daunting, especially for newcomers. That’s why we’re here to provide you with helpful advice and guidance to ensure your first-time buying experience is smooth and successful.

Understanding the Basics: New vs. Used Shipping Containers

When embarking on your journey to purchase a shipping container, one of the primary decisions you’ll encounter is whether to opt for a new or used container. This decision hinges on various factors, including your budget, the intended use of the container, and your tolerance for imperfections.

New containers, often referred to as “one trip” containers, boast pristine conditions, having undergone only a single overseas journey from the manufacturing site to their destination. As a result, they typically exhibit minimal wear and tear, making them an attractive option for buyers seeking top-tier quality. These containers are structurally sound, with intact seals and minimal cosmetic blemishes, ensuring optimal performance and longevity. While new containers may come with a higher price tag compared to their used counterparts, they offer peace of mind and assurance of quality.

The other option is to go with a used shipping container. Used containers have a history of serving in the shipping industry, transporting goods across oceans and continents. As a result, they may show visible signs of wear and tear, such as surface rust, dents, or scratches. However, despite these aesthetic imperfections, used containers remain a viable and cost-effective option for buyers on a budget. It’s important to note that not all used containers are created equal; reputable suppliers like Coast Containers ensure that their used inventory undergoes thorough inspections to guarantee structural integrity and weatherproofing. By opting for a used container, buyers can enjoy significant cost savings without compromising on functionality.

Ultimately, the choice between new and used containers boils down to personal preferences, budgetary constraints, and the intended use. Whether you prioritize pristine condition or cost-effectiveness, Coast Containers offers a diverse range of options to cater to your specific needs. With our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, you can confidently select the container that best aligns with your requirements, knowing that you’re investing in a reliable and durable solution for your shipping and storage needs.

Determining Your Container Needs: Sizes and Usage

Now that you’ve decided between new and used, you’ll want to carefully consider your container needs in terms of size and usage. Standard sizes include 20-foot and 40-foot containers, but there are also specialty sizes available to suit specific requirements. Think about how you plan to use the container – whether it’s for storage, transportation, or a creative building project – to ensure you select the right size and type.

Inspecting the Container: Wind & Watertight Guarantee

When buying a used container, it’s crucial to ensure it’s in good condition and meets your standards. At Coast Containers, we guarantee that all our used containers are Wind & Watertight, meaning they’re weatherproof and structurally sound. Our containers undergo thorough inspections to ensure they meet quality standards, giving you peace of mind knowing you’re getting a reliable product.

Understanding Shipping Container Specifications: STD vs. HC

Container specifications can be confusing for first-time buyers, but it’s essential to understand the differences. “STD” stands for standard height (8’6″), while “HC” stands for High Cube (9’6″), offering an extra foot of vertical space. Knowing these specifications will help you choose the right container for your needs and avoid any surprises upon delivery. We delved into the differences between standard and high cube containers in a recent blog post so if you’re interested in more information you can read it here.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls: Expert Tips

As you navigate the process of purchasing your first shipping container, it’s crucial to be mindful of common pitfalls and mistakes that could potentially derail your experience. By proactively addressing these issues, you can streamline the buying process and ensure a successful outcome.

One common pitfall that first-time buyers often overlook is the importance of proper container placement on level ground. Failing to ensure a level surface for your container can lead to a variety of issues, particularly with door functionality. Containers are designed to operate optimally when placed on flat, stable ground. Uneven surfaces can cause doors to misalign or become difficult to open and close, compromising accessibility and convenience. Before taking delivery of your container, take the time to prepare a level foundation to ensure smooth operation and minimize potential headaches down the line.

Another essential tip for first-time buyers is to prioritize purchasing from a reputable dealer like Coast Containers. With numerous options available in the market, choosing a supplier with a proven track record of quality and reliability is essential. Reputable dealers not only offer superior products but also provide excellent customer service and support throughout the purchasing process. By selecting a trusted dealer, you can rest assured that you’re investing in a high-quality container that meets your needs and exceeds your expectations.

Additionally, when budgeting for your container purchase, it’s really important to factor in delivery costs and any necessary modifications. While the initial cost of the container is an important consideration, overlooking additional expenses such as delivery fees or customization costs can result in unexpected financial strain. Take the time to thoroughly assess your budget and account for all associated expenses to avoid any surprises later on. Coast Containers offers transparent pricing and can provide detailed quotes that include delivery and modification costs upfront, allowing you to make informed decisions and avoid budgetary pitfalls.

Size Matters: How to Decide Between Standard and HiCube Shipping Containers

When it comes to shipping containers, size plays a crucial role in determining their usability, versatility, and overall effectiveness. While the length of containers can vary dramatically from as short as 10 feet to as long as 40 feet, when it comes to height there are really two options: standard and HiCube containers. In this article, we delve into the differences between these two types of containers, examining their dimensions, capacities, applications, and storage capabilities. Whether you’re in the logistics industry or considering a container for storage, construction, or any of the other amazing uses of shipping containers, understanding the distinctions between standard and HiCube containers is essential for making informed decisions.

Dimensions and Capacities

Standard shipping containers typically have dimensions of 20 feet in length, 8 feet in width, and 8 feet 6 inches in height, offering a total internal volume of approximately 1,170 cubic feet. On the other hand, HiCube containers, also known as high cube or HC containers, boast an additional foot in height, standing at 9 feet 6 inches tall. This extra height significantly increases their internal volume, providing around 1,320 cubic feet of space. While the width and length remain the same as standard containers, the added height in HiCube containers offers valuable extra storage capacity, making them ideal for bulky or oversized cargo.

If you’re looking for the specific dimensions of our containers and use cases for both standard and HiCube containers check out our previous blog here.

Applications and Versatility

The differences in dimensions between standard and HiCube containers result in distinct applications and levels of versatility. Standard containers are commonly used for transporting general cargo, household goods, and smaller equipment. They are also popular for storage solutions, construction sites, and retail pop-up shops due to their standardized dimensions and ease of handling.

In contrast, HiCube containers are prized for their ability to accommodate taller items, such as machinery, vehicles, and oversized equipment. Their increased vertical space makes them particularly suitable for goods that cannot be easily accommodated in standard containers. Industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing often rely on HiCube containers to transport specialized equipment and components. Additionally, HiCube containers are sometimes favoured for storage purposes, offering ample room for stacking goods vertically and maximizing warehouse space. Let’s look at why HiCube shipping containers can be a smart choice if you’re planning on using your containers for storage.

Storage Capabilities

When it comes to storage, HiCube containers have a distinct advantage over standard containers due to their increased height. This additional vertical space allows for efficient stacking of goods, maximizing storage capacity and optimizing warehouse layouts. In industries where space is at a premium, such as retail, manufacturing, and logistics, HiCube containers offer a cost-effective solution for expanding storage capacity without the need for additional facilities.

Furthermore, HiCube containers are ideal for storing tall or bulky items that may not fit comfortably in standard containers. From large machinery and equipment to oversized inventory and seasonal merchandise, HiCube containers provide the flexibility and versatility needed to accommodate a wide range of storage requirements.

For customers looking for storage solutions at home, HiCube containers offer the advantage of more storage on the same footprint. With their increased height, HiCube containers allow for efficient vertical stacking of belongings, maximizing storage space in residential settings such as backyards, driveways, or garage areas.

Cost Considerations

While HiCube shipping containers offer superior storage capacity and versatility, they often come with a higher price tag compared to standard-height containers. The increased height and specialized design of HiCube containers contribute to higher manufacturing and transportation costs. Businesses and individuals evaluating container options should weigh the benefits of additional space against the associated expenses to determine the most cost-effective solution for their storage needs.

New vs. Used Containers

One way that businesses and individuals can potentially mitigate the cost of a HiCube container is by choosing between new and used containers. New containers, often referred to as one-trip containers, are manufactured overseas and shipped to their destination with a single cargo load. They are typically in excellent condition, free from dents, rust, and other signs of wear and tear. While new containers command a higher price tag, they offer the advantage of longevity and reliability, making them a popular choice for long-term storage solutions and specialized applications where pristine condition is essential.

On the other hand, used containers, also known as second-hand or refurbished containers, have been previously used for shipping or storage purposes. While they may show signs of wear such as scratches, dents, or surface rust, used containers are still structurally sound and offer a more budget-friendly option for those seeking cost-effective storage solutions. Used containers are particularly suitable for short-term storage needs, temporary facilities, and construction projects where appearance is less of a concern.

Whether you choose a one-trip shipping container or a used container, Coast Containers carefully inspects every container we sell. Our containers are guaranteed to be Wind and Watertight (WWT) as well as rodent-proof.

Size matters when Choosing Shipping Containers

In the world of shipping containers, the choice between standard and HiCube containers boils down to specific requirements and preferences. Standard containers excel in transporting general cargo and accommodating standard-sized goods, while HiCube containers offer expanded storage capacity and versatility for oversized or tall items. By understanding the differences in dimensions, capacities, applications, and storage capabilities, businesses and individuals can make informed decisions when selecting the right container type for their shipping, storage, or construction needs. Whether opting for standard or HiCube containers, one thing remains clear: size matters, and choosing the appropriate container size can make all the difference in maximizing efficiency and optimizing storage space in various industries and applications.

Why You Should Choose Shipping Containers for Weather-Resistant On-Site Storage

It’s cold out there! And, depending on where in the country you live, it also might be snowy or wet or maybe even both. If you’re one of the many businesses that need on-site storage then this winter weather might make you even more desperate for a waterproof, secure and durable storage solution – that’s where shipping containers come in! Whether you’re safeguarding valuable equipment, inventory, or crucial materials, the choice of storage can make a significant impact on your assets. In this blog, we’ll explore the numerous benefits of using shipping containers for on-site storage, especially in the face of unpredictable weather conditions. We’ll also look at whether a new or used container might be right for you.

Rugged Construction to Withstand the Elements

Shipping containers, sometimes called sea cans, have gained a well-deserved reputation for their exceptional durability and resilience. Constructed from superior quality high-grade steel, these containers are meticulously engineered to withstand the most challenging conditions encountered during lengthy ocean journeys. This inherent strength has made them the go-to choice for on-site storage solutions that demand protection against nature’s elements. Regardless of the circumstances, be it torrential downpours, scorching heat waves, or even the fury of hurricane-force winds, shipping containers act as steadfast guardians against the weather.

Waterproof and Secure for Protection

One of the primary advantages of using shipping containers for storage purposes is their exceptional ability to provide waterproofing. All Coast Containers’ new and used containers are made from industrial-grade steel and are Wind and Watertight and rodent-proof. Shipping containers are specifically designed with tight seals and sturdy doors, ensuring that your stored items are kept safe and dry at all times. This waterproofing feature becomes particularly valuable in regions that experience heavy rainfall or are prone to flooding. By opting for a weather-resistant shipping container, businesses can have peace of mind knowing that their valuable assets will remain fully protected and undamaged, regardless of external environmental conditions.

Adaptable to Various Climates

Shipping containers are not limited by climate. Their versatility allows them to perform admirably in a variety of environments. Whether you’re dealing with freezing temperatures in the Arctic or scorching heat in the desert, these containers, especially when properly insulated, can help to maintain a consistent internal environment. This adaptability ensures that your stored items are protected, regardless of the external weather conditions.

Low Maintenance, Long Lifespan

Shipping containers offer a highly cost-effective on-site storage solution. Their ability to withstand harsh weather conditions and provide secure storage makes them an ideal choice for businesses of all sizes. These containers require low maintenance, resulting in reduced ongoing expenses for businesses. This makes them a durable and long-lasting storage option that can benefit businesses in the long run.

Shipping Container Modifications

Shipping containers are not limited to a one-size-fits-all approach. They offer a great deal of flexibility when it comes to customization, allowing businesses to meet their specific storage requirements effectively. Whether you require additional shelving for organizing your goods, ventilation systems to maintain optimal conditions inside the container or even specialized lighting solutions for enhanced visibility, these modifications can be easily implemented. By tailoring the container to your exact needs, businesses can optimize their on-site storage operations with utmost efficiency and convenience.

Coast Containers offers an array of customization options that include vents for improved air circulation, lockboxes for added security measures, windows for natural light infusion, and a variety of door options such as convenient roll-up doors. With our expertise in modifying shipping containers according to specific requirements, Coast Containers ensure that businesses have access to tailored storage solutions that perfectly align with your operational needs.

New vs. Used: Making the Right Choice for Your Business

When it comes to on-site storage solutions, businesses are often presented with the decision of whether to opt for new or used shipping containers. Each option presents its own set of advantages and the final choice ultimately depends on factors such as specific requirements and budgetary considerations. Coast Containers offers a wide range of shipping containers in various sizes and configurations to cater to the diverse needs of businesses. Whether you are looking for brand-new containers or cost-effective used ones, Coast Containers has got you covered with our extensive inventory.

New Shipping Containers

Investing in new shipping containers can offer significant advantages for businesses looking for the latest advancements in container technology. We have various sizes and types of new containers for you to choose from, such as dry containers, refrigerated containers, open side containers, and other specialty containers. By opting for new containers, you can ensure that you receive units that are in pristine condition, new sea cans have only travelled with one shipment of cargo from the factory in China to Canada (their trip to Coast Containers). For this reason, the terms “new shipping container” and “one-trip shipping container” are used interchangeably within the container industry.

One of the key benefits of new containers is their maximum longevity. While it’s true that new containers may come with a higher initial cost compared to used ones, it’s important to consider the long-term benefits they provide. Investing in new containers means lower short-term maintenance costs. For businesses with critical storage needs or those involved in industries where product integrity is paramount, such as pharmaceuticals or perishable goods, opting for new shipping containers becomes an even more sound investment. The reliability and quality assurance provided by these brand-new units give you peace of mind knowing that your valuable assets are being stored in top-notch conditions.

Used Shipping Containers

Used shipping containers, on the other hand, offer a budget-friendly alternative without compromising on resilience. It is common for used shipping containers to have been used for approximately 10-15 years for shipping freight and storing goods before they are inspected and added to our inventory at Coast Containers. Due to this reason, a used container for sale can be considered less aesthetically pleasing when compared to a new container which has only travelled once. But, despite some signs of wear, these containers are thoroughly inspected to guarantee structural integrity and weather resistance. Businesses operating within a tighter budget can benefit from the cost savings associated with used containers while still enjoying the robust features that make them ideal for on-site storage.

Investing in Weather-Resistant Shipping Containers

The weather-resistant qualities of shipping containers provide a level of protection and security that is hard to match. Whether opting for the cutting-edge durability of new containers or the budget-friendly resilience of used ones, embracing the durability and resilience of shipping containers will safeguard your assets against the unpredictable forces of nature.

Talented artists are constantly pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation by welding and shaping these industrial objects into mesmerizing forms that challenge our perception of what is possible. Through their skillful craftsmanship, these sculptures not only repurpose everyday objects but also redefine our understanding of art and the potential beauty that can be found in unexpected places.

4. Shipping Container Gardens: Blending functionality with aesthetics, some designers are incorporating greenery into shipping container structures, creating beautiful container gardens that serve both as works of art and sustainable spaces.
These gardens not only add natural beauty to their surroundings but also act as sustainable spaces that promote environmental consciousness. With careful planning and strategic placement of various plant species, these container gardens exhibit a harmonious blend of human-made and natural elements.

Aside from their visual appeal, these container gardens also offer numerous functional benefits. They can be used as outdoor seating areas, providing people with a serene oasis amidst the concrete jungle. Additionally, they serve as effective sound barriers and privacy screens in urban environments while simultaneously contributing to cleaner air quality by absorbing pollutants.

Sustainability lies at the core of these innovative garden designs. By repurposing shipping containers that would otherwise go to waste, designers are promoting resource efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Container gardens often employ eco-friendly irrigation systems such as rainwater harvesting or drip irrigation methods to minimize water usage while maintaining optimal plant health. As cities expand and green space becomes scarce, container gardens provide a viable option for integrating nature into our built environment.

Revealing the Impact of Our 2023 Holiday Food Drive

As we wrap up our 2023 Holiday Food Drive, we at Make Space are overwhelmed with gratitude and joy at the incredible success of this year’s campaign.

Over $10,000 in Donations and 3,000 Items Collected

We are thrilled to announce that, thanks to your generosity, and the generosity of those in your communities, we have collected over $10,000 in donations for local food banks and Food Banks Canada. Over the last 6 weeks, we also collected 3,000 items of food and non-perishables at our facilities and offices which will be delivered directly to local food banks. This achievement points to the kindness and compassion that defines the communities where we live and work.

Matching Donations with an Additional $26,000

But the impact doesn’t stop there. True to our commitment, Make Space Inc. will be matching these donations. Given the immensity of the need at food banks across Canada this year we are not only matching the $10,000 in donations, but we are also topping it up and will be donating $26,000 to local food banks and Food Banks Canada. With this, a grand total of $36,000 will be distributed to food banks across Canada, providing much-needed support to those facing food insecurity.

Communities United for a Worthy Cause

This Food Drive was not just about numbers; it was a demonstration of the power of community coming together for a worthy cause. Your individual efforts, whether through donations, sharing the message, or encouraging others to participate, have collectively created a wave of positivity.

One standout example is the Petawawa Patriots U13 Hockey Team who raised $170 for our Make Space Storage Pembroke location. A big thank you to the team and their coaches and parents for their support!

Our gratitude goes out to each member of our community who played a role, no matter how big or small, in making this Food Drive a success.

Our Internal Competition

If you’ve been following along with our internal competition, you may be asking – so who won? Six weeks ago, we broke the company up into four teams who fought to outraise each other. Once again, Team MSS WEST, made up of all our facilities from Manitoba to BC, took first place in the competition! Congratulations to all those on team MSS WEST and particularly to our Winnipeg location who, once again, partnered with The Agape Table and raised over $2,000 in one weekend!

Make Space Cares in 2023

This Holiday Food Drive caps off another incredible year for our Make Space Cares program. Over the last 12 months, we have supported 17 community organizations with over $10,000 in sponsorships and services and have run three fundraising campaigns: our Summer Food Drive, which raised $14,000 for Food Banks Canada, our Fall Animals Campaign which raised $1,400 for the BC SPCA and the NWT SPCA, and this, our 3rd Annual Holiday Food Drive.

In 2023, our contributions through the Summer Food Drive and Holiday Food Drive will exceed $50,000, benefitting Food Banks across Canada during this period of unprecedented demand.

We look forward to more community sponsorships and fundraising initiatives in 2024. If you’re interested in supporting one of our initiatives or would like more information on applying for a Make Space Cares Sponsorship, please fill out the form here.

How To Create Your Own Winter Home Using Shipping Containers

Are you looking to build your own festive retreat for the winter holidays that can withstand both the cold and snow? As shipping container homes become increasingly popular across Canada, the idea of creating a shipping container holiday home or cottage makes perfect sense. Due to their simple, yet durable design – they can be easily transported and modified to suit your unique needs.

In this blog post, we will show you how to create your own winter home using shipping containers.

The Benefits of Shipping Container Homes Vs Standard Homes

Affordability

Shipping containers are relatively cheap compared to purchasing a home or building materials. Depending on where you’re located, you may find them as cheap as $2,000 for a standard 20ft shipping container with some variation as you adjust the condition or size. Keep in mind that all companies will also charge a shipping fee which can vary, again, depending on your location.

Durability

Shipping containers are made of steel, which is highly versatile and has a long lifespan. Thanks to their design, they can easily withstand harsh weather conditions, such as snow, wind, and rain. On their own, without any modifications, they are also fireproof and rodent-proof, which can protect your home from potential hazards whereas standard homes typically are not.

Sustainability

If you’re looking for a sustainable choice for your new holiday home, shipping containers are one of the most eco-friendly choices you can make, as you can easily find a recycled or reused container for your project. Using one will help reduce your environmental impact and carbon footprint and you can also incorporate sustainable features such as solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and insulation.

Customizability

Much like Lego, shipping containers are modular, which means they can be easily customized & combined. By stacking or placing two or more side by side, you can create different shapes and sizes of shipping container cottages or homes, depending on what your goal or need is. You can easily customize them with windows, doors, electricity, heating, and more to ensure that you’ll be comfortable staying there during the winter or other seasons.

The Steps to Plan and Design Your Shipping Container Home

Now that we’ve talked about the benefits of shipping containers and shipping container homes, next, we’ll discuss how to build your own shipping container holiday home or shipping container cottage. For this step, we highly recommend that you consider hiring a professional or company that specializes in container customizations. This will ensure that things are done properly and that your container will last for years to come.

Step 1: Choosing a Location / Creating Your Base Budget

If you already have a property in mind, you can skip this step. However, if not, you’ll want to find a suitable location or property for your shipping container cottage or holiday home. Before you purchase anything be sure to check the local regulations and municipal permits. Additionally, you’ll also need to set a budget for your project, this will allow you to carefully plan for everything you need (modifications, delivery, materials, etc.) so that your container home will have the necessary customizations that you need/want for your dream home.

Step 2: Create Your Plan / Design

Armed with your location and budget, next you’ll want to decide on a design for your container home or container cottage. For this, you’ll need to decide how many shipping containers you want to use (if you’re looking to create a larger home) and then how to arrange them (side by side, stacked, etc.). There are a lot of design plans available online that you can use or build off – or you can take it a step further and make yours from scratch for a truly unique project.

Step 3: Choose To Use Professionals Or DIY

Again, for these types of projects, we highly recommend that you use a professional or company that specializes in container modifications. Alternatively, if you’re confident in your abilities or have extensive experience in the trades, you may be able to accomplish this yourself or with some friends. Even if you choose the DIY route, we do recommend using a licensed professional for electrical and plumbing to ensure that nothing is missed and there’s no chance of any issues in the future (as these can be life-threatening if done improperly.

Step 4: Prepare Your Delivery Site & Container

Next, you will need to prepare your location for the container delivery. To do this you’ll first want to build a solid foundation to place the container on. Be sure that the foundation is levelled as well. Once the foundation is complete, you’ll then need to inspect your container to ensure that it’s in good condition and ready for the task at hand. If there are any issues, make sure to resolve them before construction begins.

Step 5: Complete Your Modifications

We’re almost done! For this step, you’ll be completing all the modifications that you budgeted and planned for in the previous steps. This is where your container cottage/holiday home starts to come to life! If you’ve chosen to hire a construction company to help you with this phase, they’ll likely be experience enough to handle the project from here – otherwise, you’ll want to make sure that you plan your modifications out step by step. This will include anything you’ve chosen to add such as insulation, plumbing, electrical, ventilation, heating, windows, doors, and other modifications.

Step 6: Decorating, Finishing, and Furnishing Your Container

Once the modifications are complete, you’re pretty much done. However, you’ll now have one final task furnishing and stocking your container with your things/decorations. You can also take this opportunity to paint and decorate the outside of your container as well (since there shouldn’t be any more construction). If you’ve added electricity to your container, you’ll also want to pick up some appliances to make your stay more comfortable.

Getting Your New Shipping Container Home Ready for The Holidays

Now that your new holiday retreat is complete, you’ll want to add some more festive touches to make your stays during the holidays/winter months more enjoyable and cozier. For this, you may want to add a fireplace or a wood stove. Either of these fixings can help create a warm and cozy atmosphere to relax in during the winter.

If you’re unable to add in the fireplace or stove, you can also look at purchasing an electric fireplace. These often simulate the look of flames to provide the same ambience without any of the risk. They are also available in multiple sizes, depending on your available space, or even as flameless candles.

Next, you should try to add in as much seasonal décor as possible. This can include things such as pinecones, wood pieces, wreaths, mistletoe, or other festive arrangements that can help provide that traditional cottage/rustic feel to your new home.

Lastly, you can also choose to add additional festive decorations, including colourful blankets, bedsheets, rugs, tablecloths, photos, stockings, Christmas trees, and other seasonal decorations. Doing so will help create that holiday atmosphere in your container and ensure you’ll never want to leave – even when the holidays are over!

The Shipping Container Advantage: How Small Businesses Can Thrive with Compact Spaces

Shipping Container Workspaces – a Win for Small Businesses

Running a small business often means navigating the challenges of securing affordable, flexible, and adaptable workspaces. The quest for the perfect space that aligns with a small business’s budget and dynamic needs can be daunting. However, there’s a solution gaining popularity among innovative entrepreneurs — shipping containers. Let’s explore the advantages of using shipping containers as compact yet versatile spaces that empower small businesses to thrive.

The Small Business Dilemma

Small businesses frequently grapple with the dilemma of finding workspaces that are both cost-effective and flexible. Traditional building structures often come with hefty price tags and fixed layouts, making them less suitable for businesses with evolving needs. Enter shipping containers — robust, portable, and highly customizable. These steel giants, originally designed for cargo transport, are finding new life as dynamic spaces for small businesses. Let’s delve into why shipping containers are becoming the go-to solution for small enterprises.

One of the key advantages of using shipping containers is their robust construction. Made from high-quality steel, these containers are built to withstand harsh weather conditions and heavy loads. This makes them ideal for various applications, ranging from pop-up stores and cafes to mobile offices and art galleries.

In addition to their practical benefits, repurposing shipping containers also aligns with sustainability goals. By giving these structures a second life instead of letting them end up in landfills after their initial use in cargo transport, businesses contribute towards reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact.

Cost-Effectiveness of Shipping Containers

One of the most significant advantages of using shipping containers for small businesses is their cost-effectiveness. Traditional construction projects can be prohibitively expensive, especially for businesses operating on a tight budget. Shipping containers offer a more economical alternative, with reduced construction costs and quicker setup times. This affordability enables small businesses to allocate resources more efficiently, fostering growth and sustainability.
Coast Containers offers both new and used shipping containers that can be repurposed into functional workspaces. There are several cost benefits associated with using shipping containers compared to traditional building structures.

One of the primary advantages is reduced construction costs. Building a traditional structure from scratch can involve high expenses for materials, labour, and permits. On the other hand, shipping containers provide a ready-made framework that requires minimal modifications to create a functional workspace. This significantly lowers construction costs and allows small businesses to allocate their budget more efficiently.

Another benefit is the quick setup offered by shipping container workspaces. Traditional buildings often require months of construction time before they can be occupied. In contrast, repurposing a shipping container into an office or workshop can be done relatively quickly. This enables small businesses to start operations sooner and generate revenue faster.

Also, using shipping containers for workspaces offers potential long-term savings. These structures are built to withstand harsh conditions at sea and are therefore highly durable. They are designed to last for many years without significant maintenance or repairs, reducing ongoing expenses associated with upkeep.

And, if the need arises in the future, these portable workspaces can be easily relocated or expanded without major disruptions or additional costs.

Mobility and Flexibility

Portability is a major advantage offered by shipping container solutions. These containers can be easily transported to different locations, allowing businesses to adapt to changing market demands or explore new markets without the need for extensive construction or renovation work. This flexibility makes them an attractive option for entrepreneurs looking to establish a presence in different areas or participate in events such as festivals or trade shows.

Small businesses thrive on adaptability, and shipping containers deliver on this front as well. These containers are inherently mobile, allowing businesses to set up shop wherever the demand is highest. Whether it’s a pop-up shop at a local event, a market stall, or a mobile office, shipping containers provide the flexibility small businesses need to remain agile in a dynamic market.
Mobile business spaces refer to flexible workspaces that can be easily transported and set up in different locations. These spaces are designed to provide all the amenities and functionalities of a traditional office, but with the added advantage of mobility.

One of the key benefits of mobile business spaces is their ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Whether it’s for remote work, temporary projects, or events, these spaces offer businesses the flexibility to set up their operations wherever they need to be. This is particularly valuable for companies that require a physical presence in multiple locations or those that frequently need to relocate.

Customization Options for Custom Container Spaces

Shipping containers offer a high level of customization possibilities. With their modular design and ample interior space, they can be transformed into fully functional spaces that meet specific business needs. From installing windows, doors, insulation systems, electrical wiring, and plumbing facilities to incorporating branding elements – the options are virtually limitless when it comes to customizing a shipping container space.

These containers are essentially blank canvases waiting to be transformed. Small businesses can leverage this blank slate to create a space that reflects their brand identity and meets their specific requirements. From branding the exterior to designing the interior layout, the customization options are vast. This flexibility allows businesses to tailor their spaces to match their unique vision and operational needs.

One of the key advantages of custom container spaces is the ability to brand the exterior. Businesses can easily apply their logo, colours, and graphics to create a visually appealing and recognizable storefront. This helps in attracting customers and creating a strong brand presence in any location.

When it comes to designing the interior layout, businesses have complete flexibility. They can divide the space into different sections or rooms based on their specific requirements. From open-concept layouts to partitioned areas for different functions, custom container spaces can be tailored to suit any business’s needs. Imagine a clothing pop-up shop with a change room in the back, or a cafe with a space partitioned off for food prep and storage.

Businesses can incorporate various design elements such as lighting fixtures, shelving units, display cases, seating arrangements, and storage solutions to optimize functionality within the limited space. The modular nature of shipping containers allows for easy customization and modification as business needs evolve over time.

How to Get Started

If the idea of a shipping container space resonates with your small business, getting started is easier than you might think. Winterization Tips: Using Shipping Containers in Cold Climates

Whether you use shipping containers for storage, as a mobile office, or even as a pop-up shop, the time of the year has come when you might need to start thinking about container winterization. With their versatility and durability, shipping containers, also referred to as sea cans, are not only great for storage or custom projects but also perfect for surviving cold climates. However, it’s important to ensure proper winterization to keep them in top-notch condition and maximize their functionality. So regardless if you’re using them for personal or commercial purposes, these container winterization tips will help you make the most out of your shipping containers in chilly weather.

Understanding the Challenges and the Need for Container Winterization

Cold temperatures can cause a range of issues for shipping containers. One major challenge is condensation, which occurs when warm air inside the container comes into contact with the cold metal walls. This condensation can lead to moisture buildup, resulting in rust, mold, and damage to stored goods.

Another challenge is insulation. Shipping containers are typically not designed with insulation in mind, making them susceptible to extreme temperature changes. In cold climates, this lack of insulation can result in heat loss and inefficient energy usage.

Likewise, proper sealing and weatherproofing are crucial to protect the contents of the container from harsh winter elements such as snow, ice, and freezing rain. Without adequate sealing measures, leaking can occur, leading to potential damage. To address these challenges, proper winterization techniques should be implemented.

Container Insulation Options

When it comes to shipping containers, insulation is a crucial consideration for maintaining optimal temperatures and protecting the contents. There are several insulation options available that can help regulate the temperature inside a container. This is important both for ensuring that goods remain in their desired condition and if you’re using the container as an office, proper insulation means you and your employees won’t be freezing.

One of the most commonly used container insulation materials is spray foam insulation. This type of insulation creates an airtight seal, preventing air leakage and providing excellent thermal resistance. Spray foam can be applied directly to the interior walls and ceiling of the container, effectively sealing any gaps or cracks.

Another popular option is rigid foam board insulation. Made from polystyrene this type of insulation offers good thermal resistance and is easy to install. Rigid foam boards can be cut to size and adhered to the interior walls of the container using adhesive or mechanical fasteners.

For those looking for eco-friendly options, natural fiber insulations such as sheep’s wool or recycled denim can be used. These materials provide effective thermal performance while also being sustainable choices.

When insulating a shipping container, it’s important to consider factors such as climate conditions, intended use of the container, and budget constraints. Insulating a shipping container not only helps protect goods but also contributes to energy efficiency by reducing heating or cooling needs.

Heating Solutions

Now that your container is insulated it’s time to get it nice and toasty inside. Whether you are using a shipping container for storage or as a workspace, ensuring proper heating can protect your goods and provide a comfortable environment.

There are a few different options available for container heating. One popular choice is electric heaters, which are easy to install and provide efficient heat distribution. Electric heaters come in different sizes and power capacities. This allows you to choose the one that suits your container size and insulation level.

Another option is propane heaters, which are commonly used in outdoor settings. Propane heaters offer powerful heat output and can be easily transported between containers if needed. However, it’s important to ensure proper ventilation when using propane heaters to prevent the build-up of carbon monoxide.

For more permanent heating solutions, you may consider installing HVAC systems specifically designed for shipping containers. These systems offer both heating and cooling capabilities, ensuring optimal temperature control throughout the year.

Ventilation Strategies for Container Winterization

As mentioned above, ventilation is essential to consider when it comes to both maintaining the quality and condition of goods stored as well as creating ideal working conditions.

Above and beyond the need to ventilate the space if using heaters, during the winter months, temperature fluctuations can lead to condensation inside containers. This moisture buildup can result in damage to sensitive products as well as increase the risk of rust and mold inside the container. To mitigate this risk, proper ventilation is key.

The most commonly used strategy for winter ventilation in containers is the use of vents or openings strategically placed at both ends of the container. These vents allow for air circulation and help regulate temperature and humidity levels within the container. By allowing fresh air to enter and stale air to exit, condensation can be minimized.

It’s important to note that ventilation strategies may vary. They can depend on factors such as geographic location, climate conditions, and how you’re planning to use the container. At Coast Containers we are happy to help walk you through which modifications may make the most sense for your current project.

Exterior Modifications for Winter

While all the containers that Coast Containers sell, both new and used, are guaranteed wind and watertight, if you’ve had your container for a while it may be time to do some exterior weatherproofing. This involves sealing any gaps or cracks that may allow moisture or cold air to enter the container. Common techniques for weatherproofing include applying caulking or silicone sealant around seams, windows, and doors. You can also check out our blog 6 Tips and Tricks for Shipping Container Maintenance During the Winter to help you assess and maintain the condition of your container.

To further protect against winter elements, consider installing additional features such as gutter systems and awnings. Gutters help redirect water away from the container’s exterior, preventing potential damage caused by melting snow or ice dams. Awnings provide an extra layer of protection against snow accumulation on doors or windows.

And if, for any reason, you can’t modify the interior of the container to add insulation there is the option to add insulation to the exterior walls of the container. This helps in maintaining a consistent internal temperature by reducing heat transfer through the metal walls. As above, insulation options range from spray foam insulation to rigid foam boards that can be attached directly to the container’s exterior.
